2019 Scout Advancement Changes

Tuesday, June 4, 2019

The 14th edition of the Scouts BSA Handbook includes changes to advancement requirements. For example, the number of overnight camping activities required for the First-Class rank was reduced from six to three, and for the Scout Rank, members are no longer required to demonstrate, but must discuss, pocketknife safety to satisfy the requirement. The text in the corresponding chapters of the handbook was not properly edited to reflect these changes and reflects the old requirements. It is important that troops utilize the requirements listed in the Rank Requirements section of the handbook (pages 441–454).

Eagle Scout Extension Is Not Just For Girls

Tuesday, May 28, 2019

As girls now join Scouts BSA some of the new members to scouting will not have sufficient time to earn the rank of Eagle because of their age at joining. Earning the rank of Eagle takes a minimum of 19 to 20 months. Therefore, a one-time extension for earning the rank of Eagle has been created for all Scouts age 16 or 17, who first join Scouting BSA between 1 February and 31 December 2019. This one time extension is not just for our new female members of scouting but also boys age 16 or 17 who have never been a member of the BSA/Scouting BSA. The detailed information regarding requesting this one time extension is available at the attached link or you may contact Curt Lunchick at curt.lunchick@bayer.com for the details.

The Black River District now has a text reminder system.  This is the same REMIND system used by many teachers in Wake County Public Schools.

To subscribe, just send a text to 81010 with the messagte @brdistrict

Text messages sent using this system will be reminders of late-breaking information, as well as reminders to check your email for more-detailed messages.  We anticipate using this also in support of district events (such as Pinewood Derby or camporee)
